Government Corner Minimum Wage Update on July
24th! The federal minimum wage
provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The federal
minimum wage is $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008. Many states also have minimum wage laws.
Some state laws provide greater employee protections; employers must comply
with both. See the DOL website link
for State provisions: http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/america.htm Illinois' Minimum Wage
Increases to $7.75 on July 1, 2008 Governor Blagojevich reminds
Illinois employers and workers that the state’s minimum wage increases to
$7.75 an hour starting on July 1, 2008. The minimum wage will increase by an
additional 25 cents in each of the following two years to $8.00 on July 1,
2009; and $8.25 on July 1, 2010. New I-9 Form effective July 2008 U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has withdrawn the June
2008 version of Form I-9 and has reinstated the June 2007 version, but with a
new expiration date of 30 June 2009. Departments should start using the June
2007 version with the June 2009 expiration date immediately. Other than the
revision date, there are no differences between the two versions. The form is
available at http://www.uscis.gov/i-9,
as well as on the International Faculty and Staff Services web at: http://www.ohr.wisc.edu/ifss/i-9/I-9.html.
The link on the IFSS page goes directly to the USCIS web so the version that
is on the IFSS web is always the latest version. USCIS has stated that employers who used the June 2008 version while it was in effect will not encounter any difficulties. They simply want everyone to use the June 2007 version with the June 2009 expiration date. IRS Increases Mileage The rate will increase to 58.5 cents a mile for all business
miles driven from July 1, 2008, through Dec. 31, 2008. This is an increase of
eight (8) cents from the 50.5 cent rate in effect for the first six months of
2008, as set forth in Rev.
Proc. 2007-70. |

RELAY FOR LIFE JUNE 20TH-Recap The event took take place at the Oak
Brook Park District starting at 6pm on Friday and ran until 6am on Saturday
morning. There were dancing lessons with the DJ. A balloon man for the kids and a lot of walking. The evening
began with the Survivor Lap. But for
many people who attend Relay For Life®, one of the most moving parts of the
event is the Ceremony of Hope. As the light dims over campsites and team
members complete laps, the night is brightened by the glow of lighted bags
called luminaria, each of which has a special meaning. Some luminaria
celebrates the survivorship of people who have battled cancer and lived to
tell the tale. Many commemorate the lives of those who have been lost to this
disease. All represent a person who has been profoundly affected by cancer
and the family and friends who continue to be touched by that experience. Our Chapter teams have collected a
combined total of $4,878. There is still time to support your chapter. Please
consider making a donation to the team or your favorite team member. The website is: WWW.RELAYFORLIFEOHB.COM If you have any questions, feel free to
contact Katie Staffeldt at 630-742-7747 or send her an email at coasterk8@yahoo.com Tax Rebates – IRS Stimulus Payments You may be wondering if this tax rebate will affect your 2008
federal return next year. The tax
rebate is an advance credit for 2008 and will be calculated on your 2008
return. Now this is important: you are receiving a portion of your 2008
credit EARLY and if you receive it once, you won't receive it again when you
file your 2008 return. And, this is important too: if you're due a higher tax
rebate, you'll get the remainder next year when you file. If you received a
higher rebate than you should have, you DO NOT have to pay it back. A tax rebate is not interest, it's not
income, it's not a dividend – it is an ADVANCE CREDIT for tax year 2008 and
will be calculated on your 2008 return when you file in 2009. Reprinted from

Ducks for Special Olympics Illinois –
July 11th Recap This year is Special Olympic Illinois’
40th Anniversary and their goal is to drop 40,000 rubber ducks off
the Columbus Drive Bridge, into the Chicago River at Noon, on August 8, 2008
as part of their Windy City Rubber Duck Derby. All donations collected
from their “Adopt a Duck” program and merchandise sales go towards supporting
21,000 Special Olympics Illinois athletes compete and realize their dream of
being the best they can be. Big
prizes are awarded for the ducks plucked out of the water. Check out the
action and whose duck won at: www.duckrace.com/chicago Each year, organizations across
Chicagoland participate in the “Adopt a Duck” campaign by selling adoptions
at various public events all over the city and suburbs. The Chapter was
contacted by Special Olympic to participate in this event. The board thought
it would be fun and also be a good venue to promote National Payroll Week
(NWP). The chapter’s team, CAPA Silver
Spinners, dressed in the NWP shirts, and assisted Special Olympics at
the July 11th, Kane County Cougars game held in Geneva, IL. In one
evening’s effort, the team set up 34 adoptions and sold T-shirts and souvenir
ducks during the excitement of the Cougar’s double header (they lost both
games) earning $342.25 for Special Olympics. To see our pictures or to ‘Adopt
a Duck’ go to the website www.duckrace.com/chicago/capa
. There were people interested in learning about NWP and the Paycheck
Survey. The evening was fun and very
rewarding for everyone! Thank you to all chapter members who
participated in the event for giving their time to this worthy cause. Next
year, we hope to do this venue again and possibly a few other events. If you
are interested in participating, please call Paula Black 630-750-4595 or send
her an email pblack0077@yahoo.com.
