Chapter Holiday Party 2007

This year’s event will be held Friday, November 9.  The location will be announced shortly.  The date has been moved to a week earlier so that more members can attend this annual event.  We will once again collect toys for The Off The Street Club, which Hank Mazik, Treasurer, has been involved with for many years. We are looking for volunteers to help with this event.

Here is some information about the Off The Street Club:  Every year over 3,000 very needy but very wonderful boys and girls embrace the value system of Chicago’s oldest club for at-risk youngsters and reject the threats of the violent street gangs which compete for every child.  These children are the embodiment of the club’s motto: IF YOU DON’T STAND FOR SOMETHING, YOU’LL FALL FOR ANYTHING.  It was founded in 1900 and it serves kids from the age of 4-18.  Off the Street Club serves all children regardless of race, religion or geographic boundaries.

FPC and CPP Classes

Congratulations to our students who have completed their study classes for their upcoming FPC and CPP test.  This test is based on the 2006 rules and regulations.  In the coming weeks they will be taking their tests.  As we are notified of anyone passing their test we will be publishing in our next newsletter and on our website.  We wish them luck.  All students have been invited to attend the holiday party.  We are offering the study classes again in February, 2008.  As a reminder if you fail the exam you can take it again in the fall.  The fall test will be based on the 2007 rules and regulations.  Either way, we applaud your efforts to certify into the payroll profession.

Relay For Life®

One day. One night. One community:  By participating in an American Cancer Society Relay For Life® event near you, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight it – all right in your community.

Much more than a walk around a track, Relay is a time to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember those lost and get inspired to fight back. Those who have shared the same experience find common ground, hope and healing at Relay. By participating, you have the power to continue the American Cancer Society's progress toward a future where cancer doesn't take the lives of our friends and family.

Continued on next page

Relay For Life® - Continued

Relay For Life opens as cancer survivors take the first lap. This emotional time sets the stage for the importance of each participant's contribution.  A festive atmosphere always develops as participants make new friends and spend time with old ones. Highlighting the evening is a luminaria Ceremony of Hope held after dark to honor cancer survivors and to remember loved ones lost to cancer.  The luminaria candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.
Sign up today to become a part of the Relay phenomenon.

The location is Jorie Blvd and Kensington in the Mc Donald's Corp Soccer field.  Oak Brook, July 27, 2007, 6:00 pm

Government Update Continued

Business/Self-Employed division. “This state pilot is an important step in streamlining the process for small businesses, easing the time needed by Illinois business owners to meet their tax requirements and allowing them to focus on key business operations.”

‘The State of Illinois is dedicated to assisting our taxpayers,” said Illinois Department of Revenue Director Brian Hamer. “We’re excited about the opportunity to make life easier for the small businesses by partnering with the Treasury to provide one stop shopping for the payment of state withholding and federal taxes.”

The Illinois Chamber also announced its support of the pilot program and appeared at the pilots launch event in Chicago.

So what happens at Relay?

Dedicated volunteers are committed to fighting cancer in their communities year-round, but once a year, they gather at Relay For Life to celebrate survivors and caregivers, remember loved ones lost and to gain inspiration for the fight.

Each of the more than 4,800 Relays nationwide is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags with the goal of keeping one person on the track at all times. Relay For Life® brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches ... people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.

Government Update

US Treasury & Illinois Department of Revenue Announce First In the Nation Federal –State Tax Payment Pilot.

Jan. 11, 2007 Chicago--- Illinois business taxpayers are the first in the nation to be able to pay state withholding and federal taxes at the same time through a single system, the US Department of the Treasury’s Financial Management Service and the Illinois Department of Revenue announced today.

While the EFTPS, a free service from the Treasury, has been available for all federal tax payments for more than 10 years, the pilot with Illinois marks the first time state withholding taxes to be paid via EFTPS.

EFTPS, developed by the IRS and Financial Management system, is the world’s largest tax collection service.  It allows individuals, small business owners and tax preparers to pay all federal taxes – including income, employment, excise and 1040 quarterly estimated tax payments electronically.  EFTPS offers a variety of payment methods, including the internet, a telephone voice response system and desk top software.

The pilot’s goal is to encourage even more taxpayers to enroll in and use EFTPS when the service can be used to pay both state withholding and federal taxes.  Likewise, Illinois wishes to examine whether making EFTPS available for state taxpayers will improve the efficiency of the state tax collection system.  Results of the pilot will be used to help the Treasury determine whether to expand this service to other states and to add the other state taxes for payment through EFTPS.

“Treasury’s goal is to collect federal receipts timely, at the lowest cost, and through an all-electronic process,” said Don Hammond, Treasury’s fiscal assistant secretary. “We welcome partnership with Illinois Department of Revenue and are pleased that Illinois shares our commitment to provide taxpayers with an effective, secure means of managing their taxes electronically.”

“With record number of Americans turning to electronic tax filling, there is a growing demand for additional electronic means of interacting with the government,” said Brady Bennett, deputy commissioner of the IRS small
